Scott Titus

Board Chair

A native of Michigan, Scott first came to Virginia in 1991 as a Watercraft Engineer in the US Army. He spent 14 years of his 22 year Army career in Virginia, adopting it as home. After a career going to sea as a marine engineering officer Scott found his way to a new career with the US Army Corps of Engineers supporting Navigation Programs across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Scott's sailing career started in the early 1990s. He's captained and crewed on boats ranging from 15ft to 44ft. Scott and his wife currently enjoy sailing their 1967 Alberg 30, SV Sophie C on the Chesapeake Bay. Scott is the Vice Commodore of the Ware River Yacht Club and a member of Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad. Scott was formerly the President of the Rappahannock Volunteer Firefighters Association.

Scott and his wife reside in Gloucester County with their dog, Nikita. Their family includes seven adult children and two grandchildren, with a third on her way.

Steve Hanson

Steve’s love of sailing began at the age of 10 when he was invited for a ride on a 14 foot Aquacat catamaran while camping with family in Baja California. He bought his first boat at age 12, a Styrofoam hulled Sea Snark. Armed with the included owner’s manual, he taught himself the basics of sailing without drowning.

He further honed his skills while attending the U.S. Naval Academy including two years as skipper of 44 foot Luder Yawls. After graduation, he served 5 years active duty qualifying as a Submarine Officer and Navy Nuclear Engineer. He then began a successful civilian career managing businesses from start-ups to billion-dollar divisions of Fortune 500 companies interspersed with many more years of sailboat ownership and family cruising. Steve’s family have been touched by cancer so he is happy to help Sail Beyond Cancer provide current patients a brief respite..

Kim Lawver

Board Member

Originally from the Connecticut shoreline, Kim traces her love for being on the water back to her earliest childhood memories. After living in Colorado, Montana and Florida, Kim settled in Virginia in 2009 and quickly fell in love with the beauty and diversity of the Chesapeake Bay. In 2012, Kim was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and after completing chemotherapy treatments found peace and healing under sail. Regular sails with other cancer survivors provided an opportunity to breathe deeply and focus on something other than the physical and emotional challenges that had persisted through long months in the hospital.

Although Kim's professional background spans 25 years of management in both the private and public sectors, her passion for giving back has impacted both her local communities, as well as humanitarian outreaches across the world. Kim focused her graduate studies on non-profit management, and completed her Master of Business Administration with an emphasis on entrepreneurship in the non-profit sector. Her own cancer journey connected her to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) through their Team in Training program with whom she finished her first half marathon just a few days before the one-year anniversary of finishing chemo. Kim then spent several years leading LLS's fundraising and outreach initiatives in the Hampton Roads community. She now resides in Gloucester, Virginia with her husband, Carl, where they work in the marina industry and look forward to sharing their love for the water with their two young grandsons.
