Daryl Cooke

Board Secretary

Daryl grew up sailing on Long Island sound and has sailed on the Chesapeake for the past 30 years. She has sailed and raced on all types of boats over the years, enjoying the comradery of being on the water either cruising or racing.  Daryl’s love of space brought her to the Annapolis area where she worked at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center before staying home to raise her family.  She currently works for a nationwide non-profit – the Foundation for Community Betterment - and also helps put on local events such as the Maryland Seafood Festival. Daryl is proudest of her grown children and enjoys living in Arnold with her husband, Tom.  Daryl joined the founding board of SBC Annapolis in honor of her amazing sister-in-law, who went through cancer a few years ago and is one of the strongest women she knows.  Daryl finds peace on the water and hopes to give that same feeling of peace for a few hours to our nominees that are currently battling cancer.

Michael Friia

Board Member

Mike has been sailing the Chesapeake for the past 35 years.  He has been a Sail Beyond Cancer Annapolis (SBCA) volunteer since the formation of the Annapolis chapter, serving in a variety of roles, including various crew positions, training and onboarding, community outreach, and fundraising.

Mike was initially drawn to SBCA’s mission based on his experiences with family members and friends who have dealt with the challenges presented by cancer. After witnessing the positive impacts of the healing powers of wind, water, and sail with the incredible nominees and their guests, he has become even more committed to the organization.
