Board of Directors

Daryl Cooke

Board Secretary

Daryl grew up sailing on Long Island sound and has sailed on the Chesapeake for the past 30 years. She has sailed and raced on all types of boats over the years, enjoying the comradery of being on the water either cruising or racing.  Daryl’s love of space brought her to the Annapolis area where she worked at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center before staying home to raise her family.  She currently works for a nationwide non-profit – the Foundation for Community Betterment - and also helps put on local events such as the Maryland Seafood Festival. Daryl is proudest of her grown children and enjoys living in Arnold with her husband, Tom.  Daryl joined the founding board of SBC Annapolis in honor of her amazing sister-in-law, who went through cancer a few years ago and is one of the strongest women she knows.  Daryl finds peace on the water and hopes to give that same feeling of peace for a few hours to our nominees that are currently battling cancer.

Bill Connor

Board Treasurer

With over 40 years of experience in commercial construction and real estate, Bill is a recognized leader in the field of Owner’s Representation and Project Management. In 1992 he formed his own project management company, Remington Group, which managed a wide variety of signature projects throughout the US and US Virgin Islands.  Bill sold the business to Avison Young, a global real estate and consulting firm in 2015, spending the next six years as the Avison Young North America Project Management Practice Leader.

Now retired, Bill splits his time between sailing with his wife Sue, on boards of several non-profit organizations and his grandchildren.

Vicki Saporta

Board Chair

Having spent more than twenty years as a successful non-profit President and CEO, Vicki Saporta is currently retired. A life long sailor and USCG Captain, Vicki was drawn to SBC’s mission and volunteered to help start the Annapolis Chapter. Serving as President of the Board and Lead Captain, Vicki has helped get the chapter up and running. Among her many activities, she’s recruited and trained volunteer captains and crew, and has taken many nominees and their families and friends on restorative sails on board Pleiades, her beautiful Sabre 402.

Michael Friia

Board Member

Mike has been sailing the Chesapeake for the past 35 years.  He has been a Sail Beyond Cancer Annapolis (SBCA) volunteer since the formation of the Annapolis chapter, serving in a variety of roles, including various crew positions, training and onboarding, community outreach, and fundraising.
Mike was initially drawn to SBCA’s mission based on his experiences with family members and friends who have dealt with the challenges presented by cancer. After witnessing the positive impacts of the healing powers of wind, water, and sail with the incredible nominees and their guests, he has become even more committed to the organization.
